new ideas - masonry

I recently did a presentation to a structural engineering firm regarding the structural capability of reinforced masonry. A week later, I received a call from one of the engineers inquiring if I knew of any type of reinforcing that was not metal reinforcing, but a fiber glass reinforcing. I dug through my box of samples that I saved from various trade shows of new and general information. I then called the engineer and gave her the phone number. The manufacturer is Hughes Brothers Inc., Seward, NE, 1-800-869-0359 or www.hughesbros.com. The product is called Aslan 100- Fiberglass Rebar.

This special application of reinforced masonry without reinforcing steel was to be used at Argonne National Laboratory for a research project where they did not want any metal reinforcement for fear of it causing interference. When you get exposed to new products or services at industry trade associations like The World of Concrete/The World of Masonry, it may help you in a future project or bid.

To all mason contractors, I highly recommend that you take your key personnel (estimator/general superintendents) to a large trade show like this at least once every three to four years. It will pay dividends for your company in the future. For your information, Hanley Woods next World of Concrete/World of Masonry is January 16-20, 2006, in Las Vegas. Visit www.worldofconcrete.com for more information. So plan on getting some new masonry ideas and attend some of the excellence seminars and also help the "poor" casinos pay their electric bills.

In July of 2003, ACI committee 440 published ACI440.1R-03 "Guide for the Design and Construction of Concrete Reinforced with FRP Bars".

The designer should understand that a direct substitution between GFRP and steel rebar is not possible due to various differences in the mechanical properties of the two materials.
